Once you are in USA you must get a Social Security Number (SSN) in order to get salary and pay taxes. Please don’t share SSN number with anyone as this is your unique identification number in USA and can be misused.
SSN is 9 digit number, first is AREA (XXX), second is GROUP (XX), and third is SERIAL (XXXX). first 3 digits represent the state where you applied other parts are unique.

Getting your SSN – SSN is simple process, go to nearest SSA office and fill SS-5 form
- Fill up an Application For A Social Security Card (Form SS-5)
- Show your original documents to SSA officer [work permit,passport, I-94,identity card (ID)]
- Get your SSN receipt
- Receive your SSN in 2-3 weeks via mail on your address.
Lost your SSN – You must inform SSA. You can replace your SSN 3 times in a year and up to 10 times during your lifetime, name changes and other updates do not count toward these limit.
